From: sdeddy@discover-net.net (Dan and Sue Eddy)Hello,
Thanks for writing. I am descended from Alvah Gaffin's sister, Elizabeth. She married Luke Bailey. I have not researched the Hoverland family that extensively, although they were in the same area of Canada as the Gaffins. I believe Nancy's father was Harmonius, son of Andrew Hoverland. From what I have gathered, Andrew was with the Butler's Rangers as a loyalist. Does this seem to be the same Hoverland? They owned land in Willoughby, on the District of Niagara. Nancy and Alvah were married there and then came to Ogle County, IL. I do have more information on the Gaffins. Many of the family members are buried in Ogle County.
I'm glad to share information if I would have anything that you don't already have. You probably have more on the Hoverlands then I do.
SueFrom private collection of Leslie R. Gray, Past President of Ontario Historical Society:
Andrew Hoverland, formerly of Tryon Co., NY, but born in Germany, joined the British forces during the American Revoulution and fought under Col. Butler in Butler's Rangers. He had 200 acres in Tryon Co. for which he gave two years service to Col. Crawford. He had cleared 40 acres before the war and had 13 horned cattle, 3 horses, 12 hogs, furniture, utensils, all lost to the rebels.
Above included in a letter written November 2, 1958 from Catherine Gaffin Lynn
ROSTER OF BUTLER'S RANGERS
This list is based on the one compiled by A. H. Van Dusen in his article "Butler's Rangers", which was published in the journal New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, Vol. 31 (1900), pages 12-18.
This roster is based on two sources: the list of disbanded Rangers who settled at Niagara, reported by Lieutenant Colonel A. S. De Peyster in 1784, as printed in the Report on Canadian Archives, 1891 (Ottawa, Queen's Printer, 1892), pages 2-5; and, the "old U.E. List", which was published as "Appendix B" to The Centennial of the Settlement of Upper Canada by the United Empire Loyalists, 1784-1884... (Toronto, Rose Publishing Company, i 88~) pages 129-334. (This book was reprinted, with a new introduction by Milton Rubin-cam, by the Genealogical Publishing Company, Baltimore, in 1969).
The names taken from the De Peyster list are marked with an asterisk (*) and are additional to the names found in the "Old U.E. List".
Hoverland, Andrew*
This is what is recorded in An Annotated Nominal Roll of Butler's Rangers 1777-1784 , compiled and arranged by Lt. Col. Wm. A. Smy. pages 101/2
Haverland, Andrew. Private ["Andreas Hoverland"] Native of Germany. Lived in Tryon County. had fought in the French and Indian Wars (Seven Years War) and had settled in America at its conclusion. Had cleared 40 acres of his 200 acre farm. Joined in 1778. With one child at Niagara in Jul 1784. On a list of Loyalists who drew rations at Fort Erie between ?Dec 1784 and Dec. 1786. On that list his family is given as himself and one boy over 10 years of age. Listed as a settler " at the Mountain and near Fort Erie, 1785". He estimated losses at 199 pounds ($14,876 in 1991 US dollars) and was awarded 106 pounds Sterling ($7,924 in 1991 US Dollars.) In Jul 1796 he stated he had come into the Province in 1788 with a wife and three children. To date he had only received 100 acres of land. He was granted 200 acres to complete his military entitlement and 200 acres as family lands. Granted 100 acres in Willoughby Township. From Ontario Bureau of Archives, 2nd Report, 1904, Toronto King's Printer, 1905, page 983:
Claim of ANDREW Hoverland of Tryon Co. Clamt. says he was at Niagara in the year '83. Is a native of Germany. Was in the last French War. Settled in America after end of that war, resided in Tryon Co. Went to Niagara in '78 to join Col. Butler. Served all the war in the Rangers. Had 200 acres, had it soon after the French War, gave 2 years work for it to Col. Crawford. Had 40 acres clear. Vals. the clear land at 100, the rest at 100 mon. Does not know what is become of it. Had 13 horned Cattle, 3 horses, 12 hogs, furniture, utensils. The Rebals have taken all these things.
LAWRENCE BLASON, Wits:
Knew Claimt. He left his home to join the Brit. He would not stay with the Rebels. He served a long time with the Rangers. He had a farm in Tryon Co., thinks about 40 acres were clear. Remembers him in possession long before the war. He had a good stock. He had 12 horned cattle, 3 horses. Justice Burch certifies that claimt. was settled on a good farm and had good stock.
