The Schelling Family of Ogle Co., IL

Descendants of Joaquim Shilling

Generation No. 1

1. JOAQUIM1 SHILLING was born Abt. 1807 in Wurttemberg, Germany (appears in 1850 Cavetown District, Washington Co., MD census, place of birth from 1920 census record for Andrew Schelling), and died March 08, 1859 in Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD. He married (1) FRANCESCA CATHERINE SCHAFER in Germany. She was born Abt. 1810 in Wurttemberg, Germany (according to 1920 census record for Andrew Schelling), and died February 11, 1852 in Washington Co., MD. He married (2) ELIZABETH MARKOE February 21, 1853 in Washington Co., MD. She was born Abt. 1829 in MD (appears in 1860 Cavetown District, Washington Co., MD census).

Notes for JOAQUIM SHILLING:
I have a copy of his will signed by executor in April 1859. Joaquim arrived in America in 1834. I found a record of his naturalization in the Court House at Hagerstown which was October 1, 1840 in Washington Co., MD.

Following item received via e-mail from Lois Graybill: (graybill@totalaccess.net)

She found in the Miller House Library the Records of Catholic Church Cemeteries in a book "History of Western Maryland, Vol II on page 1099:

Joaquim Shilling died March 8, 1859, age 52. His first wife, Francosa, died February 11, 1852 age 42.

She also found an old newspaper article written 7/23/77 by Harry Warner (a friend of our family) titled "Many old cemeteries in city have vanished" The information about the cemetery that Joaquim was buried in says:

"The other vanished cemetery shown on this map is identified as "Catholic Cemetery" It is marked on the map on the west side of North Prospect Street, just north of the Bethel Street intersection. The map shows it occupying virtually all the space between North Prospect Street and North Walnut Street, and that's a minor mystery since North Walnut Street doesn't exist today in that area. Both the cemetery and some sketchy sort of street must have disappeared when the Moller Organ Works moved to that part of Hagerstown."

Roger, this is really interesting to me as my father was an employee of Moller Organ Works for many years, from 1941 until he retired about 1969. Now what is interesting is that he had some fellows cleaning up the yard where he kept his special lumber for these massive organs and they found a pile of tomb stones. He even brought one home that we used as a step in our stone steps. How sad because I am now sure that these were the stones from your Joaquim's cemetery. I'm not sure that anyone would know what happened to the rest. I don't remember my father ever saying.

Rose Hill Cemetery is a vast place and apparently a lot of bodies were moved to Rose Hill during it's first years from other parts of Hagerstown. There is a Scharf History that listed people buried there and many died years before the cemetery was created in 1867.

1922 - The Leaf River Mirror newspaper obituary, September 29, 1922

Andrew Schelling was born in Hagerstown, Md., on February 2, 1836. He suffered an attack of influenza last winter from which he never fully recovered, slowly declining in health until the end came early Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, 1922, at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 17 days. In 1870 he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Wilson, who passed away five years ago. To this union three daughters were born. Mrs. Anna Hoover who died about fourteen years ago; Mrs. Mary Marks, who with her husband has kept the home since the death of the mother and added much to the comfort of the aged father, and Mrs. Belle Allen, living at Love's Port, Rockford, who was with the father when the end came. There were also four grandchildren, William Hoover of Egan, F. G. Hoover of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Vivian Marks, Peacock and Evan Allen, of Rockford.

There is also a brother Henry Shelling of Leaf River, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Knodle of Myrtle, and Mrs. Lizzie Cooper of Hagerstown, Md.

The deceased was the third child of a large family of fourteen, and came to Ogle county when he was seventeen years old. He lived in this county until the end of his life's journey.

Having a man of sterling qualities and true purpose of life in view, he always looked beyond his own needs, always taking an active part in the welfare of the community. He made many lasting friends, who will miss him more and more as the days come and go. No more to hear the word of cheer and encouragement but never to forget his deeds of helpfulness.

His daughters tenderly and faithfully cared for him when he was slowly and peacefully passing away, expecting the end to come soon, yet it brought with it a strange untold sadness that comes when one needs to say, "Good-bye" to our loved ones.

The funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the North Grove Christian Church.

Rev. Willis Wilson of Chicago officiated assisted by Rev. Davenport of Rockford, and Rev. D. B. Allen, Leaf River.

4. HENRY2 SCHELLING (JOAQUIM1 SHILLING) was born December 16, 1837 in near Cavetown, Washington Co., MD (came to Ogle Co. in February 1859, appears in 1860, 1870, 1880 Leaf River Twp., 1900, 1910 and 1920 Leaf River, Leaf River Twp., Ogle Co., IL census), and died June 07, 1926 in Leaf River, Ogle Co., IL. She was born July 20, 1842 in PA (appears in 1930 Leaf River, Leaf River Twp., Ogle Co., IL census), and died June 11, 1940 in Leaf River, Ogle Co., IL.

Notes for HENRY SCHELLING:
From notes written by Elva Schelling Cramer:

When I first remember my grandparents they lived in Leaf River in a big house west of the home where my parents lived and where Walter (my brother) and I were born. My grandfather died when I was young but I remember him walking by our house and he always had candy for Walter and me, and always a big smile. Once when I was at my grandparents home we saw a snake outside by the tree. Grandpa got something to kill it, and I remember him telling me you couldn't just cut off it's head, as it could come back and bite you. Strange that I remember that. When Grandpa died, he willed all of his sons money, gave the big house to Aunt Jennie who had a large family, and gave a small house to Aunt Rena. Grandma Schelling moved to a small house on Main St. in Leaf River. They all attended the United Brethren Church in Leaf River as we did. I was probably 9 or 10 years old when my parents joined the Methodist Church. It was there that I first met Ralph Cramer and his family. I think Aunt Mary lived with Grandma until she died and then Aunt Rena moved in to take care of Grandma who lived to be almost 98 years old. She died just 6 months before my father (William Alfred) died. Grandma was short and heavy, always pleasant, and had a thing about automobiles. She would never ride in a car. In later years, I don't think she ever left the house. Occasionally, when mother and dad went to Rockford shopping, they would be late and Walter and I would stop at Grandma's for supper. I always enjoyed that.

From the "1899 Ogle County Biographical Record", pgs. 209-210

HENRY SCHELLING.- There are numerous fine farms in Ogle County which will compare favorably with any others in the state as regards production and also as to the improvements which have been made upon them. Many of these places are owned by men who have started out in the world with little more than an unlimited amount of energy and perseverance, and who have succeeded in an eminent degree in securing a comfortable home and competence. As a representative of this class of agriculturists, great pleasure is taken in presenting the name of the subject of this notice, who is living on section 26, Leaf River Township.

Mr. Schelling was born in Washington County, Maryland, December 16, 1837, a son of Joseph and Francesca Catherine (Schafer) Shilling, who were born, reared and married in Germany. On coming to the new world they settled in Washington County, Maryland, where as a stonemason and plasterer the father carried on operations throughout his active business life. He died there in 1859, and his wife passed away some nine years previously. In their family were ten children, four sons and six daughters, all of whom reached years of maturity, but one daughter is now deceased.
Henry Schelling grew to manhood in his native county, and in early life was provided with fair common school advantages. In the east he worked for his father as a plasterer and mason, but in 1859 came to Ogle County, Illinois, arriving on the 28th of February, and joining an elder brother, Andrew Schelling, who had located here about 1854. During the first two years spent here he worked as a farm hand. On the 12th of January, 1861, he was united in marriage with Miss Susan Henan, also a native of Maryland, and a daughter of William Henan, a pioneer of Ogle County, where she was mostly reared. They began their domestic life upon rented land, which Mr. Schelling operated for six years, and then made his first purchase, consisting of a tract of three hundred and twenty acres of timber land. He at once began to clear and fence the land, and it was not long before he had transformed the wild tract into a well cultivated farm. Later he bought more land, and is now the owner of two good farms adjoining his other and aggregating four hundred and twenty-three acres, pleasantly situated in Leaf River township, only a half mile from the village of that name. He has recently purchased one additional tract of seventy acres. While opening up his farm he made his home for a number of years in a frame house, which had previously been erected thereon, but it has since been replaced by a large, neat and substantial residence, while two large barns, a granary, wind pump, water works, cribs, sheds, etc., have also been built, making it one of the best improved farms of the township.
Mr. and Mrs. Schelling are the parents of eleven children, namely: Frank and William Alfred, who are both married and are engaged in farming in Leaf River township; Charles, who is married and assists in the operation of the home farm; Dallas, who is married and carries on farming near Waterloo, Iowa; Arthur, who is married and engaged in farming in Leaf River Township; Bert and John, both at home; Mary, wife of Homer Stanley, Irena, wife of Samuel Clevidence, a farmer near Polo, Ogle County; Lilly, who is engaged in teaching school and resides at home; and Jennie, also at home.

Mr. Schelling cast his first vote for Abraham Lincoln and continued to support the Republican party for some time, but believing the temperance question the most important issue before the people, he now gives his allegiance to the Prohibition party. He has never sought or desired public office, though he has acceptably served as highway commissioner and as a member of the school board in his district. Both he and his wife are faithful members of the United Brethren Church of Leaf River and enjoy the esteem and friendship of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. For almost forty years he has been a resident of the county, and during that time he has witnessed much of its growth and development and has given his support to every enterprise for its advancement, being one of its most public spirited and progressive citizens.

Henry Schelling (1837-1926) obituary from a June 1926 issue of the Leaf River, IL newspaper:

Henry Schelling was born near Cavetown, Washington Co., MD on December 6, 1837. Death came June 7, 1926 at his home in Leaf River, Ogle Co., IL. He was the son of Joaquim and Elizabeth Shafer Shilling. Mr. Schelling came to Ogle Co. with his brother Andrew in 1859. He was married to Miss Susan A. Henan of Lightsville on January 14, 1861. They have lived in Leaf River Township ever since.
Eleven Children were born to them. With the beloved wife, the following children remain, Frank J., William Alfred, Charles T., Calvin Arthur., Mrs. Irene (Samuel) Clevidence, Mrs. Jennie (George) Jones, Dallas, of Peace Valley, MO., Bert E., of Rockford, and John M., of Vallejo, CA. Also two sisters, Mrs. Lizzie (William) Cooper of Cavetown, MD and Mrs. Martha (Josiah) Knodle. Two daughters, Mrs. Mary (Homer) Stanley, and Mrs. Lily (John) Clevidence preceded him to death.
In 1862 he united with the United Brethren Church of Lightsville. After the divison of the church he aided in building of the new church. His presence in the home, the church, and community will be greatly missed. Funeral services were conducted at the church last Tuesday by the pastor, Rev. S. E. Foltz and assisted by Rev. G. Hartz of Adeline.
The singers were Rev. S. E. Foltz, Eldridge Kretsinger and mother, and Mrs. Olin Knodle with Mrs. Dorothy Hickey at the piano. They sang "Tis so Sweet to Trust", "In Jesus, Shall We Meet", "In the Sweet By and By", and "Meet Me There".
His pall bearers were his grandsons, Earl and Ray, sons of Arthur Schelling, Harry and Roy, sons of Bert Schelling, Olin, son of Frank Schelling, and Lavere, son of Charles Schelling. The deceased was widely known in the vicinity which was evidenced by the large number that gathered to pay their last respects to the aged father.
He was a man of strong convictions, always standing for the good and right things in life. Leaf River has again lost one of its pillars, both in the church and community. The entire community surely sympathizes with those who mourn the loss of a husband and father.

Burial was made in the cemetery at Lighstville. Those who attended the funeral from out of town were, Mr. and Mrs. George Clevidence of Corwith, IA, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Schelling, Mr. and Mrs. Earl Heller, Mrs. William Marks and daughter Vivian, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Miller, Mrs. Sharer, Mrs. Pearl Deppen, Mrs. Edna Seip, W. H. Barber, Mr. and Mrs. Hunter Stanley all of Rockford, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Motter and daughter Dorothy of Stratford, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Schelling of Roscoe, and Mr. and Mrs. William Myers of Savanna.

In the 1860 Leaf River Twp. census, Henry is living with the Adam Schafer family. Since his mother was a Schafer, I assume Adam's family is related:

Adam Shaffer, 39, born MD
Mary, 40, born MD
Elizabeth, 15, born MD
Wm. Hamilton, 10, born MD
Mary E., 8, born MD
Nettie, 4, born IL

OBITUARY

Lillie M. Clevidence, nee Schelling, was born near Leaf River, Illinois, where she grew to womanhood and received her education in our high school and was one of the teachers of the county for several terms. She was converted at the age of seventeen under the labors of Rev. Denius and united with the U. B. Church in which she lived a consistant Christian life, being a teacher in Sabbath School for a number of years.

She was united in marriage with John Clevidence, January 10th, 1900, with whom she lived a happy, though brief life. They removed to Corwith, Iowa, a little more than a year ago where they lived at the time of her death. During her last illness, when told that there was no hope for her recovery, she made all necessary arrangements for her funeral and expressed her only regret of separation from her husband and child. She was perfectly resigned to the will of her Heavenly Father and happy in His love, pleading with her husband to meet her in heaven. She died April 10, 1901, aged 25 years and 29 days. The remains were brought to Leaf River, arriving Thursday evening. She leaves a babe of two weeks old, husband, father, mother, brothers, sisters, and a host of other relatives and friends to mourn her early departure. The funeral was held Friday at the U. B. Church cnducted by Rev. Buckwalter, her former pastor, assisted by Rev. Beers of Adeline and Rev. Bender of this place and the interment was made in the Lightsville Cemetery.

Notes for WILLIAM ALFRED SCHELLING:
From notes written by Elva Schelling Cramer:
Dad taught school when he was young (at Mud Creek School in 1893). He owned a farm south of Leaf River and probably farmed at one time. His first wife, Ida Schrader (1869-1907) died. He was 16 years older than his second wife, Addie, my mother, and was 48 when I was born. He owned the house in Leaf River when he married my mother and both Walter and I were born there. My father owned a farm machinery business in Leaf River. A man by the name of Sam Sprecher worked for him. When business was slow, they played the game "42" in his office. In the spring time, he was always busy setting up machinery and selling twine. Dad was always well, except in his later years he had rheumatism. All of his brothers were afflicted with that also. He developed a lump in his jaw and doctors suggested having some teeth pulled. It turned out to be a malignant tumor. He took a series of radium treatments in Rockford. He was ill about a year. My mother took care of him at home with Aunt Winnie, a nurse, being there the last week or so. He died at the age of 76.

Dad and I both loved to read and he was a whiz at math problems. Since he was an older father and could afford it, Walter and I were always well dressed all through school. He was one of the first to buy a car in Leaf River, a model T Ford purchased when I was a baby.

Notes for MARY CATHERINE SCHRADER:
SUDDEN DEATH OF MRS. C. T. SCHELLING

Obituary of Young Wife and Mother, Native of this Township

Mary S. Schrader was born near Egan, Illinois on November 12, 1875, and died on February 18, 1915, aged 39 years, 3 months, and 7 days.

She was united in marriage to Charles T. Schelling on November 2, 1898. To this union, two children were born; Lavere V. and Marjorie L., aged 9 and 4 years respectively.

Mrs. Schelling was converted and baptized by Rev. W. E. Mosier, and joined the United Brethren Church. She had been a faithful and consistant member of the church for 25 years. She was one of those unassuming Christians whose fidelity was never questioned. Those who knew her best, loved her the most.

Her sickness was of short duration, and all that could be done to lengthen her life, and bring comfort to her was performed by those who were nearest and dearest to her.

On last Thursday, it was known that Mrs. Schelling was very sick and on the morning following, the sad news came from her home that she had died at 4 a.m.

The funeral was held in the United Brethren Church on Sunday. Rev. W. C. South assisted by Rev. J. L. Buckwalter of Mt. Carroll officiated. Rev. Buckwalter was the minister who united Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Schelling in marriage. The wedding gown that the deceased had worn when she became Mr. Schelling's bride also became the shroud in which she was laid to rest. She leaves a husband and two children, a mother, and one brother, and a host of relatives. She has entered into rest and died in the faith and confidence of Christian hope and as the poet McNeil has said:

"There are golden links now binding,
To a bright, a shining shore,
And the chain, so dear, is dearer,
As our friends go on before,
They are going, swiftly going,
We shall see them here no more,
There are golden links now holding,
Our feet in the narrow way,
And the chain, so strong, is stronger,
As they pass to eternal day.
They are passing, swiftly passing,
Those golden links, from the earth to heaven away"

Thus has a good wife, a kind mother, and a friend to all who knew her, gone from our midst. Her remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Lightsville. Chester G. Pyper, Samuel S. Sprecher, Jacob D. Palmer, F. L. Ayres, Dr. W. E. Pruner, and George G. Myers, acting as pall bearers.
